Target evaluation for oncology therapeutics based on novel ML/AI approaches for target discovery

by | November 26, 2023

We are currently recruiting for the following project:

Target evaluation for oncology therapeutics based on novel ML/AI approaches for target discovery

Who we are:

BCBA connects academic science trainees and recent graduates to the Bay Area’s biotech industry through hands-on consulting and due diligence projects. We are a volunteer organization composed of PhD students, post-docs, medical trainees, and young professionals looking to gain professional development for jobs in biotech companies, consulting, and venture capital. Over 450 scientists from across the country have participated in BCBA projects and have gone on to internships and full-time positions with leading biotech companies, consulting firms, and venture capital firms.

Project timeline: Week of November 27th – Week of February 11th (12 weeks total)

Who you are:

  • A graduate/professional student (i.e. PhD, MS, MBA, MD, PharmD), postdoc, or recent graduate.
  • Enthusiastic about gaining life-science business experience and helping a company conduct a deep dive of potential therapeutic targets.
  • Eager to build communication skills through conducting interviews of academic and industry key opinion leaders (KOLs) and presenting findings to the consulting team and client.
  • Interest or research experience in some of the following categories: genetics, protein function/expression, pathway mapping, market landscaping, clinical trial analysis, product development, commercialization strategy, customer needs and preferences, KOL interviews, and translational research.
  • Able to commit 10-15 hours/week as a volunteer.

What you will do:

You will be working with a company with a novel ML/AI platform seeking to identify targets in the oncology space to pursue for further development. In a consulting team, you will conduct deep profiling on a list of identified proteins. Synthesizing information from the primary literature, clinical trials, and medical databases, you will construct a comprehensive evaluation of protein targets based on their biological role/significance as well as the current therapeutic landscape to identify pipeline opportunities. You will discuss core questions with key opinion leaders across the biotech field to better understand current trends and unmet needs in oncology therapeutics, as directed by the company. Based on the target evaluation and KOL interviews, you will then strategize a development pitch for the top target candidates, outlining the development roadmap and target product profiles.

What you will get:

  • Experience conducting consulting-style research including market sizing, competitive landscaping, interviewing key opinion leaders, and case study analysis
  • Development of your professional network and communication skills through interactions with the client, interviewed stakeholders, your teammates, and BCBA leadership
  • Skills that will make you highly competitive for entrepreneurial, consulting, venture capital, and business development careers
  • Reimbursement for meals during team meetings

To Apply: Please submit this Google form by Sunday, November 26th
