Prioritization of indications for a novel autoimmune disease therapeutic

by | May 31, 2022

Project timeline: June 20th – August 2022, 6-8 weeks

Who you are:

  • A graduate or professional student (i.e. PhD, MD, PharmD, MBA, MS), postdoc, clinical resident, or recent graduate
  • Enthusiastic about gaining life-science business experience and helping a client identify how to have the most patient-health impact with their therapeutic
  • Eager to build teamwork and communication skills by researching current standards of care for autoimmune diseases
  • Interest or experience in some of the following categories: immunology, clinical trials, protein therapeutics
  • Able to commit 10-15 hours/week as a volunteer

What you will do:

You will be working with a venture-backed therapeutics company planning clinical programs for a novel autoimmune therapeutic. The client has decades of expertise in drug development, and they are currently developing a protein therapeutic to replace intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy. You and your BCBA team will help the client identify and prioritize indications treated by IVIg that could be better treated by this new therapy. Your work will directly inform the IND-enabling studies the company invests in!

To accomplish this, you and your BCBA teammates will:

  • Identify chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases currently treated by IVIg stratified by approved indications, non-approved indications with ongoing clinical trails, and case study or off-label uses
  • Prioritize indications for the novel therapeutic in two phases: – Phase 1: Summarize the epidemiology, standard of care, and clinical efficacy of IVIg for each indication from published drug labels, clinical trials, and other medical resources
  • Phase 2: Analyze, in depth, clinical trial design, data, endpoints, and outcomes for each indication

What you will gain:

  • Experience working on a diverse team to solve an open-ended therapeutics strategy problem with potential for large impact on the treatment of autoimmune diseases
  • Experience identifying opportunities for a new therapeutic to better meet clinical need, analyzing clinical data, and prioritizing the best development strategy for the new therapeutic
  • Development of your professional network and communication skills through interactions with the client, interviewed stakeholders, your teammates, and BCBA leadership
  • Skills that will make you competitive for life-science business development, consulting, and venture capital careers
